Health insurance plans

Once you terminate employment, you are no longer covered under the County’s health and/or dental plans that you may have had while you were working. That coverage will end on the last day of the month in which you terminate.

SDCERA offers retired members access to health insurance plans that include medical and dental plans. If you are the surviving spouse/registered domestic partner or dependent of a deceased SDCERA member and you receive a monthly SDCERA retirement benefit, the health plans are also available to you.

Refer to the Health Insurance Plans booklet and Health Insurance Plans fact sheet for detailed information about the plans available through SDCERA.

In addition, depending on your tier, you may be eligible for health insurance allowance, which can be used to help offset the cost of premiums for a plan offered through SDCERA or an outside plan. Please remember that the health insurance allowance is not a guaranteed benefit and may be reduced or eliminated at any time. Visit the Health insurance allowance section for more information on eligibility requirements and allowance amounts.

Certain retired public safety officers (as defined by the IRS) are allowed an income exclusion for health premiums by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which was adopted as part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006. For more information on this exclusion, click the Income tax exclusion link to the left.
