If you retired (or will retire) as a General or Safety, Tier I or Tier II member, you are eligible for the health insurance allowance as long as you had (or will have) at least 10 years of SDCERA service credit when you retire. The health insurance allowance is not a vested SDCERA benefit and is not guaranteed. The allowance may be reduced or discontinued at any time.
The health insurance allowance is available to this select group of members listed above. In addition to your membership classification and tier, your eligibility for a health insurance allowance and the amount of your allowance is also determined based on whether or not you enrolled in Medicare, the type of monthly retirement benefit you receive and your years of eligible service credit.
Generally, you must have at least 10 years of SDCERA service credit to be eligible for the minimum allowance. See the chart below to locate the monthly allowance amount you may be eligible for.
Refer to the Health Insurance Allowance fact sheet for more detailed information on eligibility requirements and how this allowance can be used.
