1. Basic death benefit
Includes a lump sum payment consisting of the member’s accumulated contributions plus interest; and a lump sum payment of one month’s salary for each full year of service credit, to a maximum of six months’ salary
2. Monthly survivor benefit
Payable for life, this benefit is equal to 60% of the retirement benefit the member would have received if he or she retired for a non-service connected disability on the date of death. If there is no surviving spouse or registered domestic partner, the payment would go to eligible children.
3. Combined benefit
This benefit is available only to an eligible surviving spouse or registered domestic partner. The benefit includes a lump sum payment of one month’s salary for each full year of service credit, to a maximum of six months’ salary; and a monthly benefit as described in the previous column (monthly survivor benefit), reduced by the actuarial equivalent of the lump sum payment based on the surviving spouse’s or registered domestic partner’s age.
