SDCERA offers an additional retirement benefit option that allows members to receive
an increased SDCERA benefit from retirement age until the age of 62. The Temporary
Supplement can be chosen in conjunction with any of the benefit options you choose.
You must
be eligible to receive a Social Security benefit to be eligible for the
Temporary Supplement.
The Temporary Supplement anticipates you will apply for and receive a Social Security
benefit at age 62. If eligible, you may opt to receive the Temporary Supplement
and have your SDCERA retirement benefit increased until you reach age 62. The amount
of the increase is based on a percentage of your estimated Social Security benefit.
The amount of the decrease is based on the entire amount of your estimated Social
Security benefit.
Your reduced SDCERA retirement benefit plus your Social Security benefit may approximate
the increased – or “supplemented” – income you had been receiving from SDCERA prior
to age 62.
The Temporary Supplement is available to members who meet the following criteria:
You retire prior to age 62
You are eligible to receive a Social Security benefit
You do not have a disability application on file with SDCERA
When SDCERA calculates your retirement benefit options, an alternative to using
SDCERA’s estimate of your Social Security benefit would be to use an estimate prepared
by Social Security in order for SDCERA to recalculate your Temporary Supplement
prior to your retirement date. The estimate you obtain from the Social Security
Administration should reflect the benefit you would be eligible to receive at age
62 based on the fact that you stop working on your retirement date.
Contact the Social Security Administration at
www.ssa.gov or 800.772.1213 to request an estimate based on your actual
retirement date.
